HOUSTON – The HCU women's basketball team is set to host crosstown opponent St. Thomas for the team's 2023-24 home opener this Tuesday evening in Sharp Gym at 6:00 p.m.
The Huskies (0-2) are coming off a 67-65 road loss to Sam Houston that saw HCU trail by 14 at the half but fight back to within two and possession with just eight seconds remaining. Junior
Enya Maguire had a big day, finishing with career-bests of 23 points and 11 rebounds. The guard connected on 9-of-18 from the floor and 5-of-9 from three-point range. Senior
Kennedy Wilson dished out six assists while freshman Hannah Field scored 11 and
Amy Cotton set a new career-high with 11 rebounds.
Maguire currently leads the Huskies, averaging 13 points per game while Wilson is adding 10 ppg and leads the team with six assists.
N'Denasija Collins made her first appearance of the season on Saturday, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds. Fields is averaging 8.5 ppg and seven rpg and shooting 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field two games into her collegiate career.
St. Thomas (0-1) last played Arlington Baptist, falling 68-55, on Saturday, Nov. 11, after opening the season with an exhibition against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Celts lost to the Islanders, 79-41. In the matchup with Arlington Baptist on Saturday, junior guard Ravyn Ellis led the way with 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals off the bench. Senior forward Jade McAlister led all players with nine rebounds.
HCU is 2-0 all-time vs. the Celts, playing in each of the last two seasons. Last year, the Huskies won, 68-43, with Collins scoring 11 with Enya and
Erin Maguire each scored 10.
The Huskies have a quick turnaround for their next game, traveling to Blacksburg, Va. to face ninth-ranked Virginia Tech at 5:00 p.m. CT.
