GREELEY, Colo. - HBU opens the 2022 season with a Football Championship Subdivision matchup against Big Sky Conference foe Northern Colorado Saturday at 2 p.m. MDT at Nottingham Field.
The game will be shown on ESPN+ and can be heard through the Husky Sports Network on HBUHuskies.com with Garrett Jones.
HBU returns nine starters on offense, but will be led by sophomore transfer quarterback
Justin Fomby, who spent his first three years at Northern Iowa, where he started two games, completing 33-of-52 passes for 433 yards, a touchdown and an interception. The Huskies also return running backs
RJ Smith and
Xzavier Ford, as well as key receivers
Vernon Harrell,
Ismael Fuller and
Branden Walker. All five starters return on an offensive line that has been shuffled around, other than three-year starting center
Christian Hood.
Seven starters return on defense, but none on the defensive line. Senior
Brennan Young and sophomore
Rodney Dansby are two of the more prolific tacklers in the FCS and are joined by tranfer
Jalyx Hunt. Experience abounds in the secondary with sixth-year senior safety
Coi Miller, joined by three-yer starter
Isaiah Cash and
Xavier Toliver.
Devion Hargrove,
Jordan Oliver,
Travis Greenawalt and
Keaton Dickey have all started at cornerback for HBU.
Senior punter
Brady Buell is one of the best in the FCS, as a semifinalist for the national Punter of the Year Award in 2021.
Nery Enriquez takes over the field goal duties full time, while Walker and freshman
Deuce McMillan will handle kick returns.
Dylan McCaffrey returns at quarterback for Northern Colorado, after throwing for 1,332 yards and is also the leading returning rusher with 227 yards last season. The Bears also return top receiver Kassidy Woods.
David Hoage leads the Bears on defense, amassing 69 tackles and 10.5 sacks last season.
Northern Colorado leads the all-time series against the Huskies, 3-0, including 45-13 victory on Sept. 11, 2021, in Houston.
The Huskies return for the home opener next weekend against Lindenwood Saturday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. at Husky Stadium.
