HOUSTON – McNeese scored seven runs in the third, four in the fourth, then 10 in the fifth in a 23-5 win over HBU in the Southland Conference series opener Thursday afternoon at Husky Field.
Junior rightfielder
Logan Letney went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and scored a run, while sophomore third baseman
Sebastian Trinidad was 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run for the Huskies (18-32, 11-11 SLC).
Kevin Ortiz and
Dawson Woods also drove in runs for HBU.
Senior lefthander
Austin Spinney (3-4) took the loss, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits in 2.1 innings.
Payton Harden went 5-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, six RBIs and scored twice for the Cowboys (28-21, 13-9), while Julian Gonzales was 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and scored four times. Andruw Gonzales went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs and Josh Leslie went 2-for-4 with a double and four runs.
Grant Rogers (6-4) picked up the win, allowing four runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 5.2 innings.
The Cowboys move two games ahead of the Huskies with two games left. The series continues with a 1 p.m. start Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. start Saturday.
