BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior
Kaitlin Smith bested her own school record in the heptathlon and the HBU track & field team enjoyed a strong second day at the Texas A&M 44 Farms Team Invitational at E.B. Cushing Stadium on Saturday.
Smith, who entered the day with the top score among collegiate competitors through four rounds, opened the day with 765 points thanks to a mark of 5.72m/18-9.25 in the long jump. She then posted a season-best mark of 37.27m/122-3.0 in the javelin for 615 points before picking up 850 in the final event, the 800 meters, with a time of 2:18.07. Her total score of 5,653 points is 69 points better than her previous record that qualified her for the NCAA Championships last season.
Senior
Garrett Gibson ran a wind-aided time of 13.99 in the 110-meter hurdles to place fourth overall while
Zara Richardson set a new PR in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:17.17 and placing seventh. In the men's 800m,
Travis Jacobs and
Krzysztof Turski finishing back-to-back with Jacobs crossing in 1:54.26 and Turski in 1:54.88, placing sixth and seventh, respectively.
Tasheba Pleasant came in seventh in the triple jump with a top leap of 11.87m/38-11.50 followed by
Ameire Johnson-Bordelon in eighth with a jump of 11.61m/38-1.25. Spencer Blake bettered his own previous best in the shot put with a throw of 14.57m/47-9.75.
Next up on the schedule for the Huskies is the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational on Apr. 15-16 in Azusa, Calif. and the Rice J. Fred Duckett Twilight on Apr. 23.
