EDINBURG, Texas – UT Rio Grande Valley rallied back from a four-run defecit in the seventh and a three-run deficit in the eighth, then scored the walkoff run in the ninth on a wild pitch for an 8-7 win over HBU in non-conference baseball Tuesday night at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Junior first baseman
Brennen Bales went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, an RBI and scored twice for HBU (8-17), while junior catcher
Tyler LaRue went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior centerfielder
Austin Roccaforte was 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and scored a run and sophomore shortstop
Sebastian Trinidad went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and scored. Sophomore catcher
Parker Edwards singled to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
Junior
Trey Valka (0-1) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in one inning of work. Junior starter
Thomas King was solid, giving up an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks in four innings.
DeAndre' Shelton went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and scored a run for UTRGV (14-10), while Bryan Sturges went 2-for-5 and scored a run. Brett Cain homered, drove in three and scored twice and Isaac Lopez homered, drove in two and walked three times.
Zach Tjelmeland (1-0) picked up the win, allowed one hit and striking out three in 1.2 innings. Starter J.C. Ariza shut HBU out on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in four innings.
Sturges singled and scored on Rojas' sacrifice fly in the fourth to give the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead.
After being shut out for six innings, Chumley led off the seventh for HBU with an infield single, then scored the tying run on Bales' double to left. Roccaforte then doubled down the rightfield line to give the Huskies the lead. Miller reached on an error, then Trinidad ripped a two-run double off the leftfield wall to extend the lead to 4-1. LaRue's RBI single up the middle capped the five-run rally.
UTRGV answered in the bottom half, as Shelton delivered an RBI triple to center and Lopez followed with a two-run home run to left to cut HBU's lead to one.
The Huskies came right back and loaded the bases with one out. Roccaforte hit a bouncer to short for a force out at second, but beat out the potential double play for an RBI. The throw from second got past first, allowing another run to come home to make the score 7-4.
The Vaqueros tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on Cain's three-run home run to center.
In the bottom of the ninth, Brandon Pimentel reached on an error and was lifted for pinch runner Spencer Serven. Sturges singled, then senior righthander
Andrew Reitmeyer came out of the bullpen for HBU. After Rojas singled to right to load the bases, Reitmeyer uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Serven to come home for the game-winner.
The Huskies return home to face New Orleans in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
