EAST LANSING, Mich. – HBU fell to Michigan State in a pair of one-run contests, 1-0 and 6-5, as the Spartans swept the series by a total of three runs Sunday afternoon at McLane Stadium.
In the first game, MSU claimed another one-run victory with a late homer and HBU lost for the first time this season when outhitting its opponent.
Junior
Austin Roccaforte went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base and junior catcher
Kevin Ortiz doubled.
Senior righthander
Jared Burch took a no-decision, shutting the Spartans out on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk in seven innings. Senior lefthander
Austin Spinney (0-2) took the loss, giving up the lone run.
Trent Farquahr went 2-for-3 and provided the only run of the game with a solo home run in eighth. Jack Frank doubled for MSU.
Starter Nick Powers also didn't factor into the decision, holding the Huskies to no runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 6.1 innings. Andrew Carson (1-0) picked up the win and Kyle Bischoff earned his fourth save of the season.
In the second game, the Huskies rallied back after the Spartans' four-run second, before MSU came away with a walkoff victory.
Junior catcher
Parker Edwards went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs, while junior designated hitter
Dawson Woods went 2-for-4 for HBU.
Junior righthander
Will Ripoll allowed four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Junior
Thomas King (0-1) took the loss, allowing an unearned run on two hits in an inning of work for the Huskies
Christian Williams went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, while Farquhar went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Spartans.
Ryan Szczepaniak allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks over the first 3.2 innings. Kyle Bischoff (1-0) picked up the win for MSU, allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and two walks over the last 1.2 innings.
The Huskies return to action when they host UT Rio Grande Valley Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Husky Field.
