BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, HBU senior
Kaitlin Smith added to her trophy case with the second All-America performance of her career, placing 12
th in the pentathlon to earn second team honors at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Smith began the day with a time of 8.50 in the 60-meter hurdles to pick up 1,017 points, finishing ninth out of the 16 competitors. Next, she picked up 806 points in the high jump with a top clearance of 1.66m/5-5.25. Smith then set a new PR in the shot put by more than a foot and a half with a throw of 12.41m/40-8.75 for 688 points, placing sixth in the event. Then, in the long jump, she posted a season best jump of 5.71m/18-8.75 for 762 points. Smith concluded the day by placing eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.56 for 842 points, leaving her with 4,115 through the five events, just three points shy of her PR set at the Southland Championships.
Smith is the first ever HBU women's track & field athlete to earn All-America honors in indoor competition. She earned her first All-America designation last year in outdoor competition when she placed 13
th in the heptathlon.
