Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tennessee – The HBU softball team opened play in the Lipscomb Tournament Friday morning when they played against Pittsburg University before playing the host team in an afternoon contest at Draper Diamond.
GAME ONE
HBU (9-9) dropped their first game of the Lipscomb tournament against the University of Pittsburgh. With a leadoff single in the first inning,
Shelby Echols set the school record for longest hit streak since the Huskies joined the Southland Conference, with a hit in her 18
th consecutive game to open the season.
Pitt did most of their damage in the first inning when they put up a three spot before scratching another run across in the bottom of the fifth.
Sarah Venker (1-3) got the start in the circle and threw a complete game for the Huskies and gave up four runs on nine hits, three walks, and two strikeouts.
Baylee Chandler and
Avery Drake recorded the other two hits for the Huskies.
GAME TWO
The Huskies found their bats in the second game of the day against hosts Lipscomb University and won 9-4.
Caitlyn Brockway got the Huskies on the board early in this one with a three-run blast to left field in the first inning, her third home run of the season. The Bison responded with a run in the bottom of the first but couldn't manage any more.
The Huskies scored two runs in the top of the second inning on a two RBI double from Breanna Herrera, Echols and
Riley Martin scored for HBU.
The Bison were able to get runs across in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but were unable to put up any crooked numbers to cut into the Husky lead. HBU extended their lead in the top of the fourth, scoring runs on RBI double from Martin and Echols.
HBU put up two more runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI triple from Herrera who was then driven in by
Jasie Roberts.
Madison Cotton (2-2) got the start in the circle for the Huskies, earning her second win on the season. She gave up one run on one hit and struck out three. Venker came in to finish the final four innings and picked up her first save of the season. She gave up one run on three hits and struck out seven in her four inning of work.
Due to inclement weather in the Nashville area, the Huskies will get the day off on Saturday before returning to Draper Diamond on Sunday to take on the likes of Bowling Green and Lipscomb.
