SB: Huskies nipped by host Lions in Southland Tournament opener

Savage joins 200-hit club; HCU faces Nicholls in elimination game on Friday

HAMMOND, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University put up a valiant effort but fell just short as second-seed and host Southeastern Louisiana University pulled out a 4-3 victory at North Oak Park in the first round of the Hammond Bracket of the 2025 Southland Conference Tournament.

The Huskies will now head into an elimination game on Friday at 1 pm against Nicholls State University.

The Huskies got on the board first in the opening frame. Haylie Savage led off with a sharp double down the left field line. One batter later, she would hit the plate, coming home on an RBI single through the right side by Karlie Barba that gave HCU the early 1-0 advantage.

Southeastern came right back in the bottom of the frame. Chloe Magee drew a one-out walk and stole second, then came in on a triple to the gap in right center field by Cydnee Schneider. Brilee Ford then brought Schneider home with a single through the right side to take a 2-1 lead. The Lions would tack on another run in the bottom of the third. Maria Detillier led off with a double off the wall in left center, and with one out, it was Ford again with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 3-1.

In the fourth, Hanna York led off the inning with her second homer of the season, ambushing the first pitch for a monstrous blast over the wall in left field.

After a triple to the gap in left center by Ella Herrewig, Chloe Foster knotted things up with a sacrifice fly to right field, leveling the board at three apiece.

HCU would threaten again in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but couldn't scratch anything across.

Savage led off the third with a single up the middle, becoming the seventh player in school history to collect 200 career hits. She finished the game 2-3 with a walk and a run scored. Ella Herrewig also went 2-3 with a run scored, while York had the solo homer and Karlie Barba added the RBI single.

Cara Pitman was solid in the circle, going six innings and allowing just six hits. She allowed just three earned runs and walked three while striking out a pair in seeing her record go to 9-10 on the season.

Southeastern got a 2-3, two-RBI outing from Brilee Ford, while Chloe Magee and Cydnee Schneider had one run driven home as well. Hallie Burns (12-5) earned the win with 3.2 innings of relief, and Britney Lewinski went three innings allowing one hit to pick up the save, her fifth of the year.

HCU falls to 17-32 on the season, and will face Nicholls State University in an elimination game on Friday at 1 pm.

The host Lions (44-13) will now advance to take on Stephen F. Austin in the winner's half of the Hammond bracket on Friday at 4 pm.
