WACO, Texas – HCU women's basketball was downed by the 21st ranked Baylor Bears in the Ferrell Center Sunday afternoon. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
Baylor (6-2) jumped out to an early 13-0 lead, knocking five of their first eight shot attempts. The Huskies (3-4) answered on offense with an 8-2 run.
Abbey Sutherland knocked down a mid range jumper before
Lauryn Mapusua made a three pointer.
Marilyn Nzoiwu drove hard in the paint and made a layup and converted on her and-one attempt.
Enya Maguire checked into the game for HCU and knocked down her first three point attempt at the 1:39 mark in the first quarter cutting the Bears lead to seven, 18-11 at the end of the first. The Bears found their groove on both ends of the floor in the second quarter and took a 36-13 lead into halftime.
The Bears extended their lead throughout the second half and beat the Huskies 79-35.
Marilyn Nzoiwu led the Husky offense with 13 points and five rebounds.
N'Denasija Collins grabbed a team high seven rebounds while
Abbey Sutherland dished out a team high four assists.
Bella Fontleroy had double-double for Baylor, finishing with 17 points and 11 boards. Jaden Owens had a big afternoon with 14 points four rebounds and a team high six assists.
HCU returns home to Sharp Gym for a midweek game against Arlington Baptist on Wednesday at 5:00 pm before facing off with crosstown foe St. Thomas on Saturday.
