HOUSTON – The HCU women's basketball team dominated on both ends of the court to take down the Arlington Baptist Patriots 101-42 in Sharp Gym Wednesday evening.
HCU (4-4) started off on fire in the first quarter, jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first minute of the game.
Lauryn Mapusua and
Jo Oly made layups on back-to-back possessions before Oly knocked down two free throws. The Patriots (3-4) ended the run with a three-pointer before
Enya Maguire answered with a three ball of her own on HCU's very next possession.
HCU exploded on both ends of the floor, forcing six turnovers and going on a 20-2 run over the next four minutes, eight of which came from
N'Denasija Collins. With time running down in the first quarter,
Marilyn Nzoiwu grabbed an offensive rebound and made a put back layup to give the Huskies a 32-10 lead heading into the second. HCU's 32 point quarter is a new season high.
HCU put on the clamps at the start of the second quarter allowing Arlington Baptist to make just one of their first 13 shots in the opening five minutes. Over those same five minutes,
Quincy Erickson and
Enya Maguire both connected on three balls while
Amy Cotton and
Elizabeth Matadi each made layups to extend the HCU lead to 28, 42-14.
The Patriots played solid defense over the final five minutes of the first half, holding HCU to just nine points. The Huskies took a 51-18 lead into halftime.
HCU and ABU both came out firing in the second half, exchanging three-pointers on the first four possessions of the third. Following two minutes of no scoring, the Patriots made a layup and floater on consecutive possessions before HCU nixed their offensive attacks.
The Huskies ended the third on a 24-4 run and scored on five consecutive possessions beginning at the 5:35 mark when Oly made a layup.
Cat Hursh pickpocketed the ABU point guard leading to an uncontested layup before Collins found
Abbey Sutherland in the corner for three. Oly and Hursh would knock down back-to-back threes to push the Husky lead to 45, 77-32. HCU finished the quarter leading 83-32.
HCU outscored ABU 18-10 in the fourth quarter, finishing with 101 points in the game. The last time the Huskies reached 100 points was on 12/12/20 when they scored 103 against McMurry. This marks the third time HCU has reached the century mark under coach Finnie.
Collins finished 7-of-10 from the field for 23 points and reached a new career high in rebounds with 15. Oly and
Enya Maguire combined to knocked down 10 three pointers and scored 21 and 19 points respectively.
Oly narrowly missed a triple-double with nine rebounds and eight assists. Mapusua had eight points in her second start for the Huskies while Sutherland had a game high four blocks. Matadi finished with five points and
Marilyn Nzoiwu finished with 10 points in 12 minutes off the bench. The Huskies were one made three-pointer shy of the programs all-time record of 15.
HCU is back in Sharp Gym Saturday afternoon when they face off against crosstown foe St. Thomas at 2:00 p.m.
