HOUSTON – HCU is set for a split home/away Southland Conference women's soccer weekend, first hosting Nicholls at Sorrels Field on Friday before heading west on I-10 for a rematch with UIW in San Antonio on Sunday. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
The Huskies (2-6-3, 2-2-1 SLC) played just one match last weekend, earning a strong 1-0 shutout win on the road against the defending conference champion, Northwestern State. Junior
Mia Salas scored her second goal of the season in the win and
Chloe Bagshaw secured shutout number three of the year. The previous weekend, HCU defeated Southeastern and tied UIW for a three-match unbeaten streak.
In conference play, HCU is even in goal differential having scored seven goals and allowed seven goals. The Huskies hold a slim 62-59 advantage over opponents in shot attempts but have put 25 shots on goal to just 19 by their opponents.
Nicholls (2-10-1, 0-6-0 SLC) comes into Friday's game on a five-match losing streak, most recently falling 2-0 at home to Texas A&M-Commerce. Rami Mitchell leads the Colonels with five points thanks to one goal and three assists while Jemma Catherwood's two goals lead the team in scoring.
UIW (1-7-2, 0-4-2 SLC) played the Huskies to a 0-0 draw in Houston on Sep. 25 and then lost a pair of road matchups 2-0 last weekend. The Cardinals host Southeastern in San Antonio on Friday before taking on HCU. Keeley Ayala and Sierra Wannamaker continue to pace UIW with seven goals combined.
HCU has enjoyed a long run of success against Nicholls, having won nine-straight meetings and boasting a 10-1-0 all-time record in the series. The Huskies own a slim 6-5-1 all-time advantage against the Cardinals.
Following this weekend, the Huskies will play their final road games of the season on Friday, Oct. 14, at McNeese and Sunday, Oct. 16, at Southeastern.
