HOUSTON – HCU is one of four teams to have sewn up a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament with Friday's contest against league-leading Lamar the first of the team's final three home games of the season. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (5-7-3, 5-3-1 SLC) take on the Cardinals (10-1-2, 7-1-1 SLC) at Sorrels Field this Friday, Oct. 21, at 5:00 p.m. before hosting Texas A&M-Commerce (4-8-2, 4-4-1 SLC) on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1:00 p.m.

HCU is currently tied for third place in the conference standings with 16 points, even with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Lamar sits atop the table with 22 points while Northwestern State is second, with 17. The next three teams in the standings are all within four points of the Huskies. Seven teams qualify for the tournament.

Last weekend saw the Huskies post a pair of shutouts on the road in Louisiana, downing McNeese, 1-0, and Southeastern, 2-0. HCU has now allowed just two goals in its last seven games and goalkeeper Chloe Bagshaw picked up her second SLC Goalkeeper of the Week honors for her performance last weekend.

So far in conference play, Mia Salas and Emily Jaimes are tied for ninth in the league with three goals while Evelyn Slaughter's three assists are tied for third-most. In goal, Bagshaw is tied for the conference  lead with five shutouts.

Lamar, in its first season back in the SLC, sits atop the standings with its lone loss of the season, 2-0 to Northwestern State, coming a few weeks ago at home. Seniors Christine Kitaru and Cariel Ellis form a formidable  scoring duo with nine and eight goals scored, respectively, on the season. In goal, senior Nicole Panis has allowed just seven goals in 13 games. The Cardinals have allowed seven goals all season, but four of those have come in the last three games.

Texas A&M-Commerce has picked up just one point in its last three games, a tie vs. Southeastern, and has lost its last two. The Lions play at UIW on Friday before taking on the Huskies on Sunday. Freshman Mya Mitchell leads the conference with eight goals in conference play with a stretch of six-straight games with at least one goal earlier in the season. Goalkeepers Jillian McKenzie and Jen Peters have split the majority of the minutes in goal with the Lion goalkeepers allowing 2.07 goals per game with a .695 save percentage.

The Huskies will close out the regular season on Friday, Oct. 28, against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders at 7:00 p.m.
