CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Southland Conference play begins this Friday for the HBU women's soccer team with a visit to the island to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before the Huskies travel to San Antonio on Sunday for their final non-conference game of the 2021 campaign against UTSA.
On Friday, Sep. 10, evening at 7:00 p.m. at Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium the Huskies (0-5) will take on the Islanders (2-3) aiming to remain unbeaten all-time against TAMUCC. HBU is 6-0-2 all-time against the Islanders with a 3-0-1 mark on the road. The last meeting between the two teams finished in a 1-1 draw this past April.
After a season-opening 5-0 win over Texas Southern, the Islanders nearly went four games without scoring a goal, getting shutout in three straight losses before a 90
th-minute game-winner over UTRGV last Sunday. Junior Samantha Palomino leads the way with three goals while senior Reaghan Lang has two. Kennedy Stelling has started the last four games in goal with a 1.00 goals against average and an .867 save percentage.
UTSA (4-2) is set to face Lamar on Friday evening before hosting the Huskies on Sunday, Sep. 12, at 2:00 p.m. at the Park West Athletics Complex. A 3-0 loss at Texas Tech this past Sunday broke a four-game win streak in which the Roadrunners outscored their opponents 9-1. Three different players, Ellis Patterson, Kendall Kloza and Anna Sutter have all scored two goals this season. In goal, junior Jil Schneider has allowed six goals in six matches with 23 saves. The Huskies are 2-5-0 all-time against UTSA.
The Huskies dropped a pair of matches in Tennessee last weekend, falling at Belmont by a 1-0 score in overtime before dropping a 3-1 contest at Middle Tennessee. Senior
Avery Cortez found the net at MT on a penalty kick to move into a tie for 10
th on the program's all-time goals scored list with 13.
HBU will return to Sorrels Field on Thursday, Sep. 16, to host defending SLC champion Southeastern for the team's first home game since Aug. 27.
