FB: HBU Falls at Prairie View A&M, 37-27

Sophomore Ismael Fuller makes two TD receptions

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – HBU held a one-point lead at halftime, but the Huskies could not muster much offense when sophomore quarterback Blaise Bentsen did not return for the second half and Prairie View A&M was able to escape with a 37-27 victory in a non-conference FCS matchup Saturday night at Panther Stadium.

Bentsen completed 8-of-12 passes for 93 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 43 yards. Freshman running back Xzavier Ford carried 14 times for 64 yards. Freshman receiver Charles King caught a touchdown for the third-straight game, making five catches for 33 yards. Ismael Fuller had five catches for 46 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Senior defensive end Vejon Wallis made a career-high 12 tackle, while sophomore safety Isaiah Cash nad freshman safety Xaiver Toliver each had 10. Senior linebacker Brennan Young added nine stops. Junior defensive lineman Kyler Baugh had five tackles, a sack and forced a fumble, while senior cornerback Jordan Oliver had the first interception of the year for the Huskies.

Junior kicker Gino Garcia made both of his field goal attempts, while senior punter Brady Buell averaged 47.0 yards on four attempts, including a 61-yarder. Sophomore Tyson Thompson averaged 38.6 yards on five kickoff returns, including a 75- and 55-yard return to set up scores.

Jawon Pass completed 23-of-35 passes for 382 yards, two touchdowns and a interception for the Panthers. Evan Fairs caught five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Antonio Mullins had six catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Kristian Mosley rushed 11 times for 88 yards.

Darius Campbell and Drake Cheatum each had eight tackles for PVAMU. Tre'Vion Green added a pair of sacks, while Gerald Smith and Logan Jackson each came up with interceptions.

PVAMU took the opening kickoff and wasted little time finding the endzone on a pair of long completion by Pass, then Bernard Goodwater punched it in from a yard out. There was a bad snap on the extra point as PVAMU led 6-0 just 1:48 into the game.

HBU answered quickly, as Bentsen ran for a first down, then hit Fuller for a touchdown as the Huskies took a 7-6 lead. PVAMU came right back, as Pass threw a touchdown a 27-yard touchdown to Mullins for a 13-7 lead with 9:37 to go in the first.

After forcing the Huskies into a three-and-out, the Panthers took over at the 32, and Pass connected with Fairs on the first play of the drive for a 63-yard touchdown to make the score 20-7. HBU came back after sophomore Thompson's 75-yard kickoff return to the PVAMU 22. Bentsen powered through with a rush for a first down, then found a wide-open King for an 11-yard touchdown to make the score 20-14.

HBU got its first stop of the game after a PVAMU three-and-out. Bentsen completed a long pass to Thompson to the 15, then scrambled to the three for a first down. On fourth-and-goal from the two, Bentsen hit Fuller again as the Huskies took a 21-20 lead with 50 seconds remaining in the first.

The Panthers regained a 23-21 lead on Reyes' 27-yard field goal with 9:25 left in the first half. PVAMU got the ball back and was driving into HBU territory late in the half, but Oliver came up with an interception and returned it to the HBU 39. Bentsen took a sack to put the Huskies out of field-goal range on fourth down, so they had to settle for a long pass attempt that went incomplete. However, there was a late hit on Bentsen, allowing Garcia to hit a 43-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to send HBU into halftime with a 24-23 lead.

Thompson opened the second half with another long kickoff return down to the PVAMU 44. The Huskies picked up a first down on a fake field goal, with holder Grant Satcher throwing to Garcia for a completion down to the PVAMU 6. HBU could get no closer, settling for Garcia's 24-yard field goal to extend the lead to 27-23.

Mosley's 25-yard run got the Panthers down to the 12, then Jaden Stewart plowed in from a yard out as PVAMU went back up, 30-27. PVAMU got the ball back and drove deep into HBU territory, but Reyes missed a 25-yard field goal with 12:58 remaining in the game.

The two sides traded punts throughout the fourth and HBU came up with a stop and a touchback gave the Huskies the ball back with 4:03 left, but redshirt freshman Desmond Young, who played the entire second half in relief of Bentsen, threw an interception and Logan Jackson returned it for a touchdown to seal the game.

The Huskies will be off next week, before opening Southland Conference play on the road against Nicholls Saturday, Oct. 2, in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
