T&F: Huskies Roll to Three Golds and Three Program Records on Day Two at SLC Championships

Boon, Welch and Drew all reach the top spot on the podium

HUMBLE, Texas – HBU student-athletes accounted for a total of four medals, three of them gold, and three program records on the second day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Turner Stadium.
 
Boon laid claim to the decathlon gold with his school record performance, totaling 7,602 points over 10 events and two days. The junior posted three PRs on day two, beginning in the 110 meter hurdle begin the day, finishing in 15.72 for 765 points. He then added 675 points in the discus with a throw of 40.50m/132-10.0 and 849 points in the pole vault, clearing 4.80m/15-9.0. Then, in the javelin, he posted a PR mark of 54.79m/179-9.0 for 660 points and closed the days with a PR time of 4:28.80 in the 1500 meters.
 
HBU's second gold of the day came in the triple jump with Christopher Welch taking first on a top jump of 16.14m/52-11.50. Welch earned silver in the long jump on day one. Ben Drew earned the gold in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a PR time of 9:06.02, winning the race by more than five seconds. In the men's pole vault, meanwhile, senior Hudson Hall improved upon his own program record with a height of 5.21m/17-1.0 to tie for third and reach the podium.
 
Johanna Drews also improved on a program record she already held in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, cutting more than 15 seconds off her previous best mark. The junior placed fourth with a time of 11:08.23. In the women's 800 meters, Jessica Rabius won her heat and posted the top time in the prelims with a mark of 2:13.11 to advance to the finals on Sunday.
 
Senior Kaitlin Smith advanced in both the 100 meter and 400 meter hurdles and will be joined in the 400h finals by Ashlyn Dobson. Smith posted the fastest time in the 100h, winning her heat with a time of 13.55. In the 400h, Smith finished fourth in the prelims with a time of 1:01.26 while Dobson qualified for the finals with a time of 1:02.52.
 
In the men's hurdles, Garrett Gibson qualified for the finals in both the 110h and the 400h. In the 400h, Gibson posted the fifth-fastest time in the prelims, finishing in 52.60, while his mark of 14.04 was good for sixth in the 100h.
 
The final day of the SLC Outdoor Championships is slated to begin earlier than originally planned tomorrow with field events beginning at 8:00 a.m. and running events at 9:00 a.m. with a rolling schedule.
