HOUSTON – The HCU track & field squad returned to competition for their outdoor season opener at the Victor Lopez Classic in Houston and picked back up where they left off during the indoor season, claiming multiple podium finishes.
In the field events, freshman
Julius Malone earned a win in the men's high jump, clearing 2.17m/7-1.50, a new PR and school record. Fellow freshman
Nysir Johnson leaped to a second-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 13.71m/44-11.75.
Balvin Israel opened his outdoor season with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, jumping 6.90m/22-7.75.
After a strong indoor season,
Layloni Watson wasted no time returning to the podium, earning a second-place finish in the women's triple jump with a jump of 12.50m/41-00.25 and a third-place finish in the long jump at a mark of 5.81m/19-00.75. Teammates
Angela Hindes (1.72m/5-07.75) and
Chimaoge Nwokedi (1.67m/5-5.75) showed out in the high jump, earning a respective third and fourth overall. In the discus,
Storm Evans earned a new PR, throwing the disc 48.25m, good for a second-place finish.
On the track, Ashton Munoz-Nieves took home a fourth overall finish in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 14.26. In the women's 400m hurdles, senior
Brianna Hinds ran 1:03.37, good enough for third-overall.
The Huskies will compete again Apr. 2 and Apr. 3 in Nacogdoches for the Carl Kight Invite and Multi at SFA.
