CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – HBU women's soccer heads into its regular season finale at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday evening with a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament still attainable.
The Huskies (3-10-1, 3-7-0 SLC) currently sit in 11
th place with nine points but are just two points behind the eighth-place Islanders (4-8-3, 3-5-2 SLC) with Central Arkansas and McNeese sitting at 10 points. A win by HBU would propel the Huskies past the Islanders while UCA would need a win against third-place Northwestern State and McNeese would need a win over co-leader Lamar. The Lamar-McNeese game originally scheduled for Friday has been postponed in accordance with COVID-19 protocols and tentatively rescheduled for Sunday. If they are unable to play the game, it will be treated as a tie with both teams getting one point in the standings.
HBU picked up a 3-0 road win in their last game at Nicholls with
Noor Abukishk and
Lauren Avila each scoring a goal with an assist from the other.
Avery Cortez scored the third goal with an assist from
Katie Marker. Abukishk leads the Huskies with three goals and four assists on the season with all three of her goals serving as game-winners, tying her for second in the conference in the category.
In SLC play, senior Larissa Fagundes leads the Islanders with three goals and two assists with Abby Deakin and Maggie Murray each scoring twice. In goal, Kyleigh Hall holds a save percentage of .829 against SLC opponents with a 1.13 goals against average. TAMUCC is in the midst of a four-match winless stretch, most recently playing to a 0-0 draw at Nicholls and falling 3-1 at Southeastern Louisiana.
Should HBU earn a berth to the SLC Tournament, the Huskies would be the No. 8 seed and play on Tuesday, Apr. 13, at 5:00 p.m. The tournament will be held at the Lamar Soccer Complex in Beaumont, Texas.
