T&F: Smith Sets New Program Hurdles Record at UH Alumni Invitational

The senior broke a 10-year-old record in the 100 meter hurdles

HOUSTON – Senior Kaitlin Smith broke an HBU program record that had stood for 10 years in the 100 meter hurdles on Saturday as the Huskies' track & field teams competed at the Houston Alumni Invitational.
 
Smith won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 13.70, cutting more than a tenth of a second off her previous PR, breaking Amber Goodson's previous record time of 13.78 set in 2011. Smith also set a new outdoor PR in the long jump, leaping 5.79m/19-0.0 to place second.
 
In the men's triple jump, junior Christopher Welch earned another event win with a top jump of 16.00m/52-6.0 while jumping into a strong wind. Junior Scott Boon set a new PR in the discus with a top mark of 41.29m/135-5 while freshman Jorg Vanlierde also set a new personal best with a throw of 37.89m/124-3. Boon also cleared 4.67m/15-3.75 in the pole vault.
 
Jessica Rabius earned a win and posted a new PR time of 2:11.07 in the 800 meters, setting a new meet record in the process. In the men's 110 meter hurdles, Garrett Gibson placed second with a time of 14.31. In distance events, Ben Drew and Johanna Drews posted strong times in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Drew finished in 9:15.85 while Drews crossed the finish line in 11:26.93.
 
HBU will head to College Station, Texas next Friday and Saturday, Apr. 9-10, for the Texas A&M Team Invitational.
