COLLEGE STATION, Texas – HBU track & field closed day two at the Texas A&M Team Invitational on Saturday with two new program records, numerous PRs and three multis athletes putting themselves in position to qualify for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Rogers fell just shy of his own school record in the decathlon with 7,541 points while Boon improved his PR by more than 250 points, totaling 7,487. In the 110 meter hurdles, Rogers run a 14.12 to win the event with Boon finishing in 15.57. Boon won the next four events with both multis athletes setting new PRs on Boon's throw of 42.79m/140-4.0 and Rogers reaching 37.42m/122-9.0. In the pole vault, Boon cleared 4.70m/15-5.0 while Rogers reached 4.50m/14-9.0. In the final throwing event, the javelin, Boon's winning mark was 51.39m/168-7.0 with Rogers placing third with a throw of 48.47m/159-0.0. In the final event, Boon bested his previous PR by more than 12 seconds with a time of 4:30.15 while Rogers finished second in 4:46.63.
Smith, meanwhile, improved her heptathlon school record by nearly 300 points with a total of 5,584. She started the day with a mark of 5.68m/18-7.75 in the long jump followed by a mark of 29.09m/95-5.0 in the javelin. She then closed her day with a PR in the 800 meters, winning the event with a time of 2:18.10.
Garrett Gibson, already the school record holder in the 400 meter hurdles, broke teammate
Denim Rogers' record in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.03 to place second. In the 800 meters,
Jessica Rabius earned an event win with a time of 2:12.29.
Christopher Welch finished second in the triple jump thanks to a top mark of 15.78m/51-9.25. In the women's 1500 meters,
Johanna Drews set a new PR with a time of 4:41.49 to finish seventh while in the men's 1500
Ben Drew placed sixth with a time of 3:57.16.
Victoria Herpin posted a new PR in the shot put with a top mark of 13.66m/44-9.75 to place eighth.
HBU will next hit the track on Saturday, Apr. 24, across town at the Rice J. Fred Duckett Twilight at the Wendel D. Ley Track.
