T&F: Welch and Hall Lead the Way With New Program Records at Rice

HOUSTON – Two-time All-American Christopher Welch set a new program record in the triple jump and Hudson Hall set a new program record in the pole vault for the second consecutive day at the Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice at the Wendel D. Ley track on Saturday.
 
Welch, who earned indoor All-America honors for the second-straight year during the recent indoor season, won the triple jump with a wind-aided mark of 16.19m/53-1.50. He also leapt 16.18m/53-1.0 with legal winds to set a new program record by nearly a foot and a half over his own previous record.
 
In the pole vault, Hall cleared 5.20m/17-0.75 to win the event and set a new program record. Hall previously set the record at 5.10m/16-8.75 on Friday at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
 
HBU had multiple strong showings in the hurdles with Garrett Gibson winning the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in 52.36. In the women's 400h, Ashlyn Dobson set a new PR and improved on her previous best mark by more than a second with a time of 1:02.28 and finished second. Denim Rogers picked up an event win in the 100h, crossing the finish line in 14.34 while running into the wind.
 
Isaiah Cash placed second in the long with a top mark of 7.38m/24-2.50 while Scott Boon finished fifth thanks to a new PR mark of 7.20m/23-7.50. Ben Drew finished fourth in the 1500 meters, crossing in 3:54.65 while Hannah McNaughton posted a third place finish in the javelin with a top throw of 38.91m/126-8.
 
The Huskies will next travel to Hammond, La. for the Southeastern Strawberry Relays on Saturday, Apr. 10.
