T&F: Three HBU Records Fall in Outdoor Opener

A pair of freshmen and a senior set new program records

HOUSTON – In the outdoor opener for the HBU men's and women's track & field teams three program records were broken and a number of PRs were established at the Houston Spring Break Opener hosted by the University of Houston.
 
Freshman Isaiah Cash, fresh off his Southland Conference indoor championship in the long jump, won the long jump and set a new school record. His top mark of 7.55m/24-9.25 earned him the win and was wind-aided. His top legal win mark of 7.45m/24-5.50 sets a new program record mark.
 
In the men's javelin, freshman Jorg Vanlierde shattered the previous record with a top distance of 57.49m/188-7 to place second overall and first among collegiate competitors. Scott Boon, meanwhile, set a new PR in the event with a mark of 51.60m/169-3 to place fourth.
 
The third new program record of the day came in the men's pole vault with senior Hudson Hall clearing a height of 4.96m/16-3.25 to take fifth place.
 
Hannah McNaughton recorded a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 39.51m/129-7. In the long jump, Kaitlin Smith posted a new outdoor wind-aided PR of 5.78m/18-11.75 to place fourth while Noa Grochowski also set a new personal best mark of 5.33m/17-6.0.
 
Smith also set a new PR in the 200 meters, finishing 10th with a time of 25.59. The third PR of the day for Smith came in the 100 meter hurdles, a race in which she placed second after crossing the finish line in 13.94.
 
In the men's hurdles, Garrett Gibson posted a wind-aided PR of 14.28 in the 110 meter hurdles for a third-place finish. In the 400 meter hurdles, the junior also placed third after finishing in 53.10.
 
In distance running events, Johanna Drews finished atop the field in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:38.11 while Ben Drew took first on the men's side, finishing in 8:40.36. Travis Jacobs was the Huskies' top finisher in the 1500 meters, finishing second in 4:13.10.
