BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The HBU men finished third in the team standings with both the men's and women's track & field teams setting new program-bests in team points while
Denim Rogers and
Christopher Welch recorded event wins to close out day two of the 2021 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex on Monday.
The men's team racked up 77.5 points to place third overall and shatter the program's previous best team mark of 45 points, set last season. The women, meanwhile, totaled 40 points to surpass the previous top mark of 29, also set last season.
"It was pretty amazing, really," said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country
Theresa Fuqua. "We had our first 1-2 finish in an event. It was our first time having three scorers in an event, and we did that twice. There were so many first in our program and there's no questions it was the best two days HBU track and field has ever had. It was awesome."
In the heptathlon, HBU filled three of the top four spots in the final standings with Rogers taking gold,
Scott Boon winning bronze and
Jorg Vanlierde placing fourth. Rogers' total of 5,571 marks a new PR and set a new program record. Boon, meanwhile, finished with 5,455 points and Vanlierde ended the meet with 5,173.
Rogers, who tied the SLC meet record in the 60 meter dash to open day one of the heptathlon, against matched a meet record to start the day with a time of 8.15 to take first in the 60 meter hurdles and add 944 points. Boon finished the 60h in 8.76 with Vanlierde coming in at 8.88. Boon and Vanlierde tied for the win and 819 points in the pole vault, both clearing 4.70m/15-5.0 with Rogers taking third with a height of 4.60m/15-1.0. In the seventh and final event, the 1,000 meters, Boon was HBU's top finisher with a time of 2:48.22 in third, followed by Vanlierde in 2:55.07 and Rogers in 2:55.09.
In the triple jump, Welch captured the top spot on the podium with a jump nearly three feet better than anyone else. Welch leapt 15.78m/51-9.25 for the win while
Augusto Miro-Quesada picked up five points with his fourth-place jump of 14.19m/46-6.75. Freshman
Zyyare Brown added another point for the Huskies, placing eighth with a top mark of 13.48m/44-2.75. In the women's triple jump, sophomore
Tasheba Pleasant set a new PR and placed fifth with a mark of 11.72m/38-5.50 for four points.
The Huskies also gained points in both the men's and women's 60 hurdles. On the men's side, Rogers placed second with a time of 8.07, missing out on first by one-hundredth of a second.
Garrett Gibson added to the team's point total, as well, finishing fifth with a time of 8.11.
Kaitlin Smith, fresh off her pentathlon win on day one, also posted a second place finish after crossing in 8.63.
Smith continued to rack up points for the Huskies, ending the day with a fifth-place finish in the high jump after clearing 1.68m/5-6.0. Also on the track, in the women's 800 meters,
Jessica Rabius posted a time of 2:14.60 to place third and earn a spot on the podium. In the men's 800,
Travis Jacobs recorded a seventh-place finish on a time of 1:56.08. The women's 4x400 relay team comprised of
Ashlyn Dobson, Rabius,
Shirmalyn Moore and
Zara Richardson also gained a point for the Huskies, placing eighth with a time of 3:56.57.
