CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The women's soccer 2021 Southland Conference Tournament kicks off on Wednesday at Dr. Jack A. Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium with the HBU Huskies taking on the UIW Cardinals at 4:00 p.m.
HBU (4-13-1, 4-8 SLC) heads into the tournament as the No. 6 seed and will face the No. 3 seed Cardinals (7-9-2, 7-4-1 SLC). The Huskies' roster boasts five all-conference players with
Noor Abukishk,
Ryan Ford and
Katie Marker all earning second team honors while
Talin Rizo and
Mia Salas were third team selections.
Marker leads the Huskies will 11 points on three goals and five assists, including a two-goal, two-assist effort in a win over Nicholls. Abukishk is second on the squad with 10 points, tying with Marker for the team lead with three goals and four assists. Ford, meanwhile, is tied with Marker with five assists to go along with two goals for nine points. In goal, senior goalkeeper
Karla Ramirez has played every minute and has totaled 91 saves for the fifth-highest total in program history.
UIW finished the season strong, going 4-1-1 over its final six games to move into the third spot in the standings. The Cardinals are led by sophomore Sierra Wannamaker who recorded four goals and three assists this season while Keeley Ayala and Isabella Beletic both finished with three goals and two assists. Margaret Kofron saw the majority of the minutes at keeper, posting a 1.30 goals against average.
The last time the two teams met, UIW earned a 2-0 victory in San Antonio. The Huskies own a 6-4 all-time record against the Cardinals.
The winner of Wednesday's game will move on to the next round to face the winner of No. 2 McNeese and No. 7 Nicholls on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
