T&F: Boon and Welch Post Big Marks for HBU on Saturday

The juniors both fell just short of new program records

LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior Scott Boon led the Huskies' trio in the heptathlon at the Texas Tech Invitational while Christopher Welch posted an impressive triple jump mark and was one of four Huskies to earn event wins for the HBU track and field program at the H-Town Speedcity Series at the University of Houston on Saturday.
 
At the TTU Invitational, Boon bettered his previous PR in the heptathlon by 167 points and fell just short of the program record by eight points. The junior totaled 5,520 points to place third. Heading into the day, the highest heptathlon score nationally was 5,423.
 
Boon started the day with a time of 8.66 in the 60 meter hurdles and then set a new PR in the pole vault, clearing 4.80m/15-9.0. He then closed out the event with a time of 2:49.33 in the 1,000 meters.
 
Denim Rogers finished the heptathlon seventh with 5,025 points. He was the top finisher in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.12. He then cleared 4.40m/14-5.25 in the pole vault and ran the 1,000m in 3:10.93.
 
Freshman Jorg Vanlierde finished 10th in his first-ever college combined event, totaling 4,951 points. He ran the 60m hurdles in 8.94 before taking second in the pole vault with a height of 4.80m/15-9.0. Finally, in the 1,000m he finished in 2:53.65.
 
In Houston, Christopher Welch won the triple jump for the second-straight weekend. The junior won the event by nearly a foot as he posted a top mark of 16.13m/52-11.0, less than six inches shy of the school record he set last season. At the start of the day, only five people nationally had posted a better mark. In the long jump, freshman Isaiah Cash posted a top mark of 6.89m/22-7.25 in his first collegiate meet.
 
Garrett Gibson earned a first place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.06 and set a new PR in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.04. Travis Jacobs won the 800 meters with a mark of 1:58.68 while Ben Drew picked up a win in the 3,000 meters. The senior finished the distance race in 8:50.94 while teammate Stephen Aguilar set a new PR and placed second with a time of 8:52.11.
