Kaitlin Smith set a new program record in the pentathlon against a field consisting primarily of competitors from the Big 12, Pac-12 and the SEC as she placed third overall with 3,934 points and a new PR in the long jump.
Smith started the pentathlon with a time of 8.66 in the 60m hurdles and then reached a height of 1.64m/5-4.50 in the high jump. In the shot put, she posted a top distance of 11.01m/36-1.50 and stood in sixth place through three events. Smith then set a new PR in the long jump, placing third with a leap of 5.81m/19-0.75 and jumping three spots to third in the pentathlon. She ended the day with another top three finish in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:23.16. Heading into the day, only two competitors nationally had posted higher point totals than Smith's 3,934.
Scott Boon is the top Husky through four events of the heptathlon with a total of 3,075 points putting him in sixth place. Boon's day featured three new PRs among the four events, including a third place showing in the long jump with a PR of 7.17m/23-6.25. He opened with a PR time of 7.20 in the 60 meter dash and his third PR came in the high jump, clearing 1.97m/6-5.50. He also posted a mark of 12.42m/40-9.0 in the shot put.
In eighth place is
Denim Rogers with 2,781 points. Rogers opened the event with a second place finish in the 60m dash, crossing in 6.99. In the long jump, he registered a pair of fouls on his first two attempts before recording a mark of 5.57m/18-3.25 on his final attempt to earn points. He then closed out the day with a mark of 11.83m/38-9.75 in the shot put before clearing 2.00m/6-6.75 in the high jump for the second-highest height of the event.
Competing in his first collegiate combined event, freshman
Jorg Vanlierde holds a point total of 2,615. Vanlierde, one of just two freshmen competing, posted a time of 7.22 in the 60m dash followed by a distance of 6.30m/20-8.0 in the long jump. He then posted a mark of 12.25m/40-2.25 in the shot put and cleared 1.73m/5-8.0 in the high jump.
The men will conclude the heptathlon with three events on Saturday, Jan. 30, with the first scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.
