HOUSTON – Five men and women from the HBU track & field team took part in the H-Town Speedcity Series hosted at the University of Houston on Saturday with junior
Jessica Rabius winning the 800 meters and
Kaitlin Smith setting a new personal best in the long jump.
Junior
Jessica Rabius earned a win in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line in 2:18.92 to win the race by more than two seconds. She finished ahead of runners from Houston, Tulane and North Texas.
The Huskies showed well in the 60 meter hurdles with
Kaitlin Smith and
Denim Rogers both qualifying for the finals. Smith posted the top time in the prelims, winning her heat with a time of 8.67, before placing second in the finals with a mark of 8.73. Rogers, meanwhile, posted a time of 8.32 to qualify for the finals before running the second race in 8.26 to place fourth.
Smith also set a new PR in the long jump, placing second with a mark of 5.74m/18-10.0 to best her previous top mark by three inches. She also finished third in the high jump, clearing a top height of 1.59m/5-2.50.
A trio of Huskies were at the top of the leaderboard in the men's high jump with junior
Scott Boon posting a new PR of 1.93m/6-4.0, beating out teammate Rogers for the top spot by clearing the height on his first attempt while Rogers cleared the same height on try number two. Freshman
Jorg Vanlierde took third with a height of 1.84m/6-0.50.
The Husky track and field team is next scheduled to compete on Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Birmingham Invitational.
