WBB: HBU Adds Enya Maguire

Guard from Ireland one of three to sign with Huskies Friday

HOUSTON – HBU women's basketball has signed Enya Maguire to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Donna Finnie aEnya Maguire Actionnnounced, along with two other signings, Friday.

"Enya is a leader," Finnie said. "We were struck by how vocal she is on the court and that was an area we identified as vital in recruiting another point guard. She understands the game very well, has tremendous court vision and there are a lot of people who will get the ball exactly where they want it from Enya! It is obvious that she is super coachable and wants to make everyone around her better, so we are very excited about that for her freshman year. I expect that Enya will strengthen our point guard rotation immediately."

Maguire is a 5-4 guard from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and is the younger sister of Huskies junior guard Anna Maguire. She played at Ulidia Integrated College in Belfast, then for coach Bill Holup at The Hun School in Princeton, New Jersey. She also played club basketball for the Ulster Elks and coach Pat O'Neill. She helped guide Ireland to a bronze medal at the U20 B Women's Basketball European Championships and has a gold medal in judo for Northern Ireland.

"I chose HBU as I believe it is the perfect location for me to pursue my academic and athletic career, due to the incredible people and atmosphere I experienced when I first got on campus," Maguire said. "I am extremely excited to get started at HBU in the next few months and begin my journey as a Husky!"

In 17 games in her senior season at Hun, Maguire averaged 14.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 3.2 steals per game. She scored a season-high 30 points, with seven rebounds, five assists and seven steals in a win over Steinert. After missing the first eight games of the season with an injury, she had 20 points and 10 assists in only her second game back in a win over Mercersburg.

"Enya was our floor leader on the court," Bill Holup, head coach at The Hun School, said. "Not only does she have terrific skills as a guard, but her basketball IQ is incredible! We were very fortunate to have her on our team, not only was she our most talented player, but she elevated everyone else's game to another level. Enya is a talented basketball player, but her treat personality really makes her a unique individual. Not only will Enya make a positive contribution to the women's basketball team at HBU, she will also make it to the entire school community."

Along with Naomi Pierce and Armani Reed, who signed during the early period in November, and the signings of Linda Brückner and Annabel Deerbon, who were also announced today, the Huskies will have five freshmen joining the team for the 2020-21 season.
