SB: HBU Splits a Pair in Day Two of Spring Games

Brockway hits a bomb, Schaefer collects 4 RBI’s

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADEIRA BEACH, FLORIDA – The HBU Huskies drop the first game of the doubleheader to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 8-5 and won the second matchup against the Sacred Heart Pioneers in extra innings, 4-3.
 
Game 1:
In the bottom of the first inning the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles got off to an early lead after Johneisha Rowe who walked to lead off then stole second and was later advanced by a Sammi Poehlman groundout and scored on a Reedy Davenport single to the pitcher giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
 
The Eagles extended their lead after a single and wild pitch brought Hope Hernandez to second base and scored on the next play Kacie Huber singled up the middle scoring Hernandez, Huber advanced to second on the throw. A wild pitch advanced Huber to third and scored on a Rowe single bringing the lead to 3-0 after the second.
 
To lead off the top of the third Riley Bullen walked and was advanced to second base on an Amber Lotz groundout. The following play Avery Drake reached on an error advanced to second on a Shelby Echols single, Bullen advanced to third on the play. Freshman third baseman Katy Schaefer tripled down the left field line scoring everyone making the game 3-3. Caitlyn Brockway comes up next and singles to the shortstop scoring Schaefer giving the Huskies a 4-3 lead.
 
The Huskies tacked on another run in the top of the sixth on a Brockway homerun to center, her first of the year, extended the lead to 5-3.
 
After two singles followed by a bases clearing triple from Haley Morrel tied the game up 5-5. Huber singles scoring Morrel and gave the Eagles a 6-5 lead. A wild pitch as Hannah Shemansky struck out allowed her to reach on an error, Huber advanced to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and later scored on a Poehlman single up the middle giving the Eagles a commanding 8-5 and would later go on and win the game.
 
Game 2:
The game started off with a scoreless first inning, in the bottom of the second the Pioneers got off to a 2-0 lead after two straight singles and a fielder's choice that scored the first run of the game followed by a passed ball that scored one more.
 
HBU was silent in the first two innings but made some noise scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Avery Drake was hit by a pitch and advanced after Shelby Echols walked. Freshman Jasie Roberts singled to right center that scored Drake, Echols advanced to third on the play. Katy Schaefer singled and then with two outs Megan Hiers singled through the right-side scoring Echols, advancing both runners tying the game at 2-2.
 
The Huskies scored one more to give them a 3-2 on a double from senior Heidi Jaquez and two walks issued to Drake and Echols followed by an RBI single from Roberts.
 
The Pioneers scored one in the top of the seventh that tied the game up. HBU left two runners on the seventh to try to walk to pioneers off.
 
The Pioneers went down in order in the top of the eighth inning that gave the Huskies an opportunity to walk it off in the bottom half of the inning. Due to tournament rules, extra-inning games allowed the Huskies to place the last out on second base, Amber Lotz. Lotz advanced on a Drake single and later scored on a walk off single to center by Schaefer notching the Huskies 10th win of the season.
 
In the circle for the Huskies was sophomore Sarah Venker who collected her third win pitching a complete game improving to 3-2 on the season while striking out three, walking three, and giving up three unearned runs off of four hits in 8.0 innings of work.
