BSB: HBU Holds Off Texas State, 7-5

Sophomore RHP Chris Burns tosses five shutout innings

HOUSTON - HBU sophomore righthander Chris Burns hurled five near-perfect innings and the Huskies had six extra-base hits in a 7-5 victory over Texas State in non-conference baseball Wednesday at Husky Field.

The only baserunner Burns (1-1) allowed was on a wild pitch after a strikeout. He held the Bobcats hitless with three strikeouts and no walks. Senior lefthander Brent Pronger started and allowed one run on two hits in two innings.

Junior designated hitter Parker Wayne went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs and a stolen base, while senior first baseman Johnny Gonzales went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run for the Huskies (1-4). Senior leftfielder Ryne Edmondson doubled and drove in a pair and junior centerfielder Christian Dumont tripled, drove in a run and scored twice.

Isaac Ponce (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings and Jacob Little gave up two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning for Texas State (3-2). Garrett Hermann held HBU to one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Wesley Faison went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and scored twice for the Bobcats, while Cole Coffey went 2-for-4. John Wuthrich hit a three-run home run in his only at-bat.

Wayne took the first pitch he saw from Ponce deep to left for a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first, but Faison answered with a solo home run in the second.

Dumont was hit by a pitch to lead off the second and senior shortstop Cal Clark walked. Wayne dropped an RBI single into center, then stole second to put runners at second and third. Edmondson came through with a two-run double to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.

Gonzales doubled in the third and scored on Dumont's triple to center. Senior second baseman Trent Franson delivered an RBI single to left to extend HBU's advantage to 6-1.

Junior third baseman reached on an infield single in the fourth, then Gonzales hit his second double of the game and a throwing error allowed Miller to score to put the Huskies up, 7-1.

Junior righthander Jaron Roblyer was solid in the eighth, but gave up back-to-back singles to lead off the ninth. A bloop single loaded the bases and Peyton Lewis beat out a potential double play grounder to drive in a run. Wuthrich pinch hit and followed with a three-run homer to left, before Tucker Redden flied out to right to end the game.

The victory marked HBU's first ever over Texas State, snapping a 16-game losing streak to the Bobcats.

The Huskies continue their homestand when they face Ball State in a three-game series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field. Friday's opener begins at 2 p.m. and begins the Husky Sports Network pay-per-view schedule. Individual games are $4.95, weekend series are $9.95 and the 2020 Baseball Season Pass can be purchased for $34.95.
