WSOC: Huskies Fall to 17th-Ranked Horned Frogs, 3-0

Ashtyn Franks makes 10 saves for the Huskies in goal

HOUSTON – The HBU women's soccer team went into the half with the game scoreless against 17th-ranked TCU but the Horned Frogs emerged with the 3-0 win on Thursday evening at Sorrels Field.

The Horned Frogs (6-1-0) were on the offensive early with a quick corner kick and a pair of shots in the first three and a half minutes but HBU (1-5-0) countered with a Xya Balderas attempt getting blocked in the fourth minute and a Jessica Nevils shot on target getting stopped by the TCU keeper. The Huskies had another attempt on target off the foot of Presley Payn at the 37:08 mark the Emily Alvarado again came up with the save for TCU. The Horned Frogs peppered HBU goalkeeper Ashtyn Frank in the first half but the redshirt freshman came up with seven saves to go along with a team save for the clean sheet in the first half.

In the second half, it took less than 30 seconds for the Huskies to come within inches of a 1-0 lead as a Bryce Reynolds header off a corner went off Alvarado's fingertips and then glanced off and over the crossbar. TCU got on the board in the 55th minute on Gracie Brian's sixth goal of the season and then pushed its lead to 2-0 less than four minutes with a goal off a corner kick by Michelle Slater. The Horned Frogs then tacked on their final goal late in the 89th minute.

Franks finished the night with a career-high 10 saves while Payne had two shot attempts, as did Balderas. The Huskies had a total of six shot attempts with three on target. TCU ended the game with 14 shots on goal out of their 24 shot attempts. Corner kicks ended up 7-5 in TCU's favor.

"I think the girls came out and put together a good performance against a team ranked 17th in the nation," said head coach Misty Jones. "We hold them the first half, don't let them score, and it was about 15 minutes into the second half before they finally got one. I think the effort was great and the thing that was good is that we were generating some chances on goal, also. We had the first chance in the second half when we hit the crossbar off the corner. It was a back-and-forth game. I was very pleased with the effort. We started five freshmen and our youngsters are performing really well and that's certainly encouraging."

The Huskies wrap up the non-conference portion of the 2019 schedule this Sunday, Sept. 15, evening against UTSA at Sorrels Field at 7:00 p.m.
