Senior RHP Brady Batten goes distance for HBU

HOUSTON - In his final collegiate start, HBU senior righthander Brady Batten tossed a complete game and the Huskies used a five-run fifth to score a 6-2 victory over McNeese in the Southland Conference series opener Thursday afternoon at Husky Field.

Batten (3-5) threw 142 pitches, allowing two runs on 11 hits, while striking out four and walking two. The outing was the first complete game of his HBU career.

Senior catcher Erik Voller went 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and scored a run. Junior second baseman Trent Franson, junior first baseman Johnny Gonzales and junior leftfielder Ryne Edmondson each had a hit, an RBI and scored a run for the Huskies (18-33, 10-18 SLC).

Rhett Deaton (7-4) took the loss for McNeese (29-24, 14-14), allowing six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings. Hunter Reeves and Bryan King combined to hold HBU scoreless over the final 3.1 innings.

Nate Fisbeck went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and scored a run, while Payton Harden went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and scored a run for the Cowboys. Carson Maxwell and Reid Borque each went 2-for-4.

Harden led off the game with a bloop double to leftcenter, then scored on an RBI single by Fisbeck.

HBU answered in the second when Edmondson drew a leadoff walk and scored on junior third baseman Cal Clark's RBI double to rightcenter to tie the game, 1-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, senior designated hitter Derek Reilly drew a leadoff walk and senior centerfielder Anthony Jones followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Nathan Soriano, Franson plated the go-ahead run on a ground ball to third, with Reilly beating the play at the plate. Gonzales delivered an RBI single and a sacrifice fly by junior rightfielder Brandon Bena put the Huskies ahead, 4-1. Voller ripped an RBI triple to rightcenter, then Edmonson's came through with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-1.

Fisbeck led off the eighth with an infield single and later scored on Jake Dickerson's RBI single to make the score 6-2.

Bourque singled with one out in the ninth and Harden followed with a double down the leftfield line, but Fisbeck and Colton Rasbeary each popped out to end the game.
