NEW ORLEANS - HBU fell, 8-7 in 10 innings, in the completion of Friday's suspended game, then New Orleans clinched the series with a 14-6 victory in Southland Conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field.
In the first game, junior third baseman
Cal Clark went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and scored twice, while senior catcher
Erik Voller went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run and junior rightfielder
Brandon Bena went 2-for-4 with a run for the Huskies (17-32, 9-17 SLC).
Senior
JT Newton (0-5) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk, while senior
Brady Batten took a no-decision, giving up six runs, five earned, on 12 hits with five strikeouts and four walks in eight-plus innings.
Gaige Howard went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and scored a run, while Pearce Howard was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run for the Privateers (27-24, 11-15). Collin Morrill went 2-for-6 with a double and scored twice and Darren Willis went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
The Huskies struck in the top of the first when Soriano led off with a walk and scored on Voller's RBI single.
The Privateers answered back as Morrill doubled to lead off the bottom of the first and scored on a Pearce Howard sacrifice fly. UNO added another in the second, when Gaige Howard singled and scored on a Willis double, then a single run in the third as Raburn led off with a walk and scored on Kennard's sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-1.
HBU finally broke through in the sixth when Gonzales was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and back-to-back singles by Bena and Voller loaded the bases with no outs. Edmondson drew a walk to force in a run, then back-to-back squeeze bunt singles by junior third baseman
Cal Clark and senior pinch hitter
Derek Reilly put the Huskies ahead, 4-3. Talbot lifted a sacrifice fly to center, then Soriano's sacrifice bunt plated the final run in a five-run rally to take a 6-3 lead.
Gaige Howard hit a solo home run to rightcenter in the seventh to pull UNO within two.
Batten came out for the ninth, but Raburn led off with a single and Pearce Howard hit a sharp line drive to first that Gonzales couldn't handle for an infield single. Kennard drew a walk to load the bases with no outs and HBU turned to Newton. Gaige Howard walked to make the score 6-5, then the Huskies cut down a run at the plate on Salo Iza's ground ball to second. After Gauthier struck out, Robert Fabelo pinch hit and drew a walk to tie the game, 6-6. Willis struck out to end the rally and send the game to extra innings, but a storm suspended the game until Saturday.
Clark doubled to rightcenter with two outs in the 10th, then Baker delivered an RBI single to regain the lead for the Huskies.
Morrill reached on an error to lead off the 10th, then went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pearce Howard followed with an RBI single to center to tie the game and after UNO loaded the bases, Iza delivered a base hit past a drawn in infield for the game-winner.
In the second game, UNO rallied for seven runs in the fifth, six of which were unearned, en route to a 14-6 victory to clinch the series.
Clark went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while Baker went 1-for-1, was hit by a pitch, and drove in a run for HBU. Franson and Gonzales each went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Senior righthander
Daniel Endsley (1-4) took the loss, allowing 11 runs, only five earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings.
Morrill went 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored three times, while Pearce Howard went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and scored twice for UNO.
Chris Turpin (5-4) picked up the win, allowing six runs, four earned, on 11 hits with six strikeouts in six innings. John Barr notched his second save, tossing three perfect innings and striking out four.
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday, weather permitting.
