T&F: Huskies Set Two New Records at J. Fred Duckett Twilight

Gibson and Brugier improve their own record marks on Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas – Garrett Gibson and Salome' Brugier set new program records on Saturday at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight held at Rice's Ley Track as the HBU track & field team concluded its final meet of the outdoor season ahead of the 2019 Southland Conference Outdoor Track Championships.
 
Gibson broke his own record in the 400 meter hurdles, bettering his time by more than two-tenths of a second with a mark of 52.72 and placing fourth. Fellow freshman Sergio Rivera Gonzalez also a set a new PR in the event, finishing in 54.55. Gibson also posted a fourth-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.69.
 
Brugier, meanwhile, also improved upon a record she already held in the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.27m/10-8.75. Kaitlin Smith set a pair of new PRs at the meet while competing in the heptathlon. The sophomore's first personal best was a 14.02 mark in the 100 meter hurdles in which she won in the heptathlon on Friday before winning the 100 hurdles on Saturday with a time of 14.21. Also in the heptathlon, Smith put up a new PR mark of 1.61m/5-3.25.
 
Imani Jacquet reached the finals in the hammer throw and set a new PR of 46.53m/152-8.0 to place seventh while Jacob Bowers posted a top distance of 41.56m/136-4.0 in the men's discus and finished ninth after reaching the finals. Francis Bongwalonga recorded the Huskies' third PR in throws at the event with a toss of 11.60m/38-0.75 in the shot put.
 
Christopher Welch finished third in the triple jump with a top distance of 14.81m/48-7.25 while Ana Kriletic posted a second place finish in the javelin with a throw of 37.73m/123-10.0. Hannah McNaughton took fourth with a mark of 36.74m/120-6.0 followed by Christal Dickson in fifth with a throw of 36.11m/118-6.0.
 
In the women's 200 meter dash, freshman Roxane Adama finished 12th with a PR time of 25.30 while Dominique Lacy also set a new personal best of 26.06. Shantelle Slaughter came in fifth in the women's 400 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 1:04.11.
 
HBU will take part in the 2019 Southland Outdoor Championships hosted by Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La. from Friday, May 3, through Sunday, May 5.
