SAN ANTONIO - HBU scored three in the fourth, but Incarnate Word answered with four in the fifth and that was all the scoring as the Cardinals claimed a 4-3 victory in Southland Conference baseball Friday at Sullivan Field.
Junior second baseman
Trent Franson went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while junior first baseman
Johnny Gonzales singled, drove in a run and scored for the Huskies (12-26, 5-12 SLC).
Senior righthander
Brady Batten (2-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 5.2 innings. Senior
Daniel Endsley threw 2.1 shutout innings.
Sean Arnold went 3-for-5 and scored a run, while Lee Thomas went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs for UIW (25-13, 13-7). Taylor Smith singled, drove in a pair and scored, while Ryan Gonzalez and Ridge Rogers each had two hits.
Tyler Miller (5-3) earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned on four hits with nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings out of the bullpen, while Bernie Martinez notched his sixth save by holding the Huskies scoreless in the ninth.
Franson led off the fourth with a single, went to second on an error, then Gonzales followed with an RBI single. Junior rightfielder
Brandon Bena singled and senior catcher
Erik Voller laid down a sacrifice bunt. Edmondson hit a chopper to the right side, but the first baseman couldn't handle it and both runners scored to put the Huskies ahead, 3-0.
Arnold led off the fourth with a single, then Ryan Flores singled. Smith drove them both in to cut HBU's lead to one, then Lee Thomas hit a two-run homer to give the Cardinals the lead.
The series concludes with a 2 p.m. first pitch Saturday.
