HOUSTON - Sam Houston State erupted for an eight-run fourth inning, propelling the Bearkats to a 17-5 victory over HBU to clinch the Southland Conference series Saturday at Husky Field.

Johnny Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs, while junior third baseman
Trent Franson went 2-for-4 with a run for the Huskies (4-10, 0-2 SLC). Senior catcher
Erik Voller went 2-for-4 with a run and senior leftfielder
Anthony Jones went 2-for-2 with a run. Junior rightfielder
Brandon Bena added an RBI double.
Senior righthander
Brady Batten (0-2) took the loss for HBU, allowing nine runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings.
Riley McKnight went 3-for-6 with a double, a grand slam and three runs, while Reese Johnson went 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs and a run for the Bearkats (9-3, 2-0). Jordan Cannon went 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a pair of runs, while Hunter Hearn went 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice and Jack Rogers hit a solo home run and scored twice.
Riley Gossett (2-1) allowed two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings in relief of injured starter Seth Ballew.
The series concludes with a 2 p.m. first pitch Sunday at Husky Field.
