BSB: Lamar Tops HBU in 13 Innings, 6-3

Junior third baseman Trent Franson goes 2-for-5 with an RBI

HOUSTON - HBU relievers held Lamar scoreless for eight innings, but the Cardinals broke through with three runs in the top of the 13th inning to outlast the Huskies, 6-3, in a non-conference baseball matchup between the two Southland Conference foes Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.

Junior third baseman Trent Franson went 2-for-5 with an RBI and senior leftfielder Anthony Jones drove in a pair for the Huskies (4-8).

Junior lefthander Brent Pronger (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in three innings. Senior starter Taylor Franzman allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings.

Avery George was 3-for-7 and scored twice, while Robin Adames went 2-for-7 with a double and two RBIs for the Cardinals (6-6). JC Correa went 2-for-6 with an RBI and Anthony Quirion homered and drove in two. Rhett McCall doubled, walked and scored a run.

AJ Ozorio-Brace (1-0) picked up the win for Lamar, holding HBU scoreless on one hit with three strikeouts and walk over the final three.

Lamar got on the board in the first on Correa's RBI single, then Quirion hit a two-run shot to left in the fourth to put the Cardinals ahead, 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, junior second baseman Cal Clark reached on an infield single, then sophomore designated hitter Hayden Baker followed with a single two rightcenter. Junior shortstop Nathan Soriano was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Jones delivered a two run single up the middle to cut the deficit to one. Franson's squeeze bunt tied the game, 3-3.

McCall doubled to lead off the 13th when junior rightfielder Brandon Bena made a diving attempt in rightcenter, but couldn't hang on. Cole Coker's sacrifice fly gave the Cardinals the lead, then Adames came through with a two-run double for good measure.

The Huskies return to action when they host defending regular-season champion Sam Houston State to begin Southland Conference play Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
