BSB: Northwestern State Rallies Past HBU, 7-5

Junior LF Ryne Edmondson goes 2-for-3 with RBI, run for Huskies



HOUSTON - Trailing by two with two outs and no runners on in the ninth, Northwestern State rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to salvage the final game of the Southland Conference baseball series with a 7-5 win over HBU Sunday afternoon at Husky Field.

Junior leftfielder Ryne Edmondson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while senior catcher Erik Voller doubled and drove in a pair of runs for the Huskies (8-19, 2-7 SLC). Junior rightfielder Brandon Bena and junior second baseman Nathan Soriano each extended their hitting streaks to seven games.

Senior JT Newton (0-3) took the loss for HBU, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits with six strikeouts over the final 3.2 innings. Junior starter Kyle Gruller allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 5.1 innings.

Peyton Davis went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored, while Tyler Smith and Hilton Brown each went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Demons (14-11, 6-6). Caleb Ricca was 2-for-6 and scored a run.

Cullen McDonald (3-0) earned the win, holding HBU hitless over the last three innings. Starter Nathan Jones allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Ricca led off the third with a bunt single and scored on an RBI single by Brown to give the Demons the lead, but Soriano led off by reaching on a two-base error in the bottom half and scored on an RBI groundout by junior centerfielder Chase Talbot to tie the game.

NSU reclaimed the lead as Davis singled to lead off the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Sam Taylor.

In the sixth, junior third baseman Trent Franson and Bena singled. Voller then blooped a two-run double to center to put the Huskies ahead, 3-2. Edmondson followed with an RBI single, then Soriano ripped an RBI triple to center to extend HBU's lead to 5-2.

Austin Stegall led off the seventh with a single and pinch runner Lenni Kunert scored on Smith's RBI triple to cut the deficit to two.

In the ninth, Larson Fontenot reached on a two-out infield single, then Davis delivered an RBI double. J.P. Lagreco came through with an RBI single to tie the game, then scored on an error to give the Demons the lead. Jeffrey Elkins capped the rally with an RBI double for a 7-5 lead.

The Huskies return to action when they face Lamar in a non-conference matchup Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Beaumont, Texas.
