T&F: Boon Sets New Pole Vault Record in First Outdoor Meet

The HBU freshman bettered the previous mark by more than a foot

HOUSTON – Freshman Scott Boon set a new program record in the pole vault as the Huskies opened the 2019 outdoor track & field season at the 68th Annual TSU Relays on Friday afternoon at Durley Stadium.
 
Boon, who set a new program record in the event during the indoor season, cleared 4.55m/14-11 to place fifth for the Huskies. The program's previous record of 4.15m/13-7.25 was held by Garrison Fick and set in 2016.
 
In the men's long jump, freshman Christopher Welch took first with a top wind-aided distance of 6.97m/22-10.5 while Von Beaudion placed third with a distance of 6.78m/22-3, also wind-aided. Ana Kriletic was the Huskies' top finisher in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.29m/17-4.25 to place fourth while Kaitlin Smith took sixth with a leap of 5.19m/17-0.50.
 
Denim Rogers and Boon took first and second in the javelin with Rogers recording a top distance of 50.69m/166-4 and Boon posting a top throw of 45.68m/149-10. A trio of Huskies took first through third in the women's javelin with Kriletic placing first, recording her best distance of 37.31m/122-5.0 on her first throw of the event. Christal Dickson placed second with a distance of 36.85m/120-11 while Hannah McNaughton took third with a mark of 36.07m/118-4.0.
 
In the throws, Chantel Ward place second in the shot put with a throw of 12.78m/41-11.25 while Jemira Thomlinson posted a top mark of 37.28m/122-4.0 to place fourth in the discus.
 
On the track, Shantelle Slaughter posted a time of 1:06.09 in the 400 meter hurdles to place second. In the men's 400m hurdles, Garrett Gibson finished third with a time of 53.39 while Sergio Rivera—Gonzalez crossed the finish line in 57.35.
 
Kaitlin Smith finished third in the 100 meter hurdles prelims with a wind-aided time of 14.64 while Dennise Reyes also qualified for the finals, crossing in 15.72. Dominique Lacy and Ariel White both qualified for the 100 meter dash finals with times of 12.79 and 12.86, respectively.
 
HBU will conclude the TSU Relays on Saturday, Mar. 16, at Durley Stadium with events beginning at 9:00 a.m.
