Freshman Christopher Welch breaks his own triple jump record

HOUSTON, Texas – HBU got a new program record in the triple jump and a number of new personal records at the Howie Ryan Invitational hosted by the University of Houston inside the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday.
 
Freshman Christopher Welch broke his own program triple jump record by six inches with a top leap of 15.35m/50-4.50 to place second overall at the meet but first among collegiate competitors. Welch has now set a new program record in two of his first three collegiate meets. Augusto Miro-Quesada placed seventh with a distance of 14.30m/46-11.0.
 
Garrett Gibson, also a freshman, set a new PR in the 60 meter hurdles. Gibson first won his heat in the prelims with a time of 8.36 before setting the PR in the semis, crossing the finish line in 8.26 to reach the finals. In the finals, the freshman placed third with a time of 8.33. In the women's 60h, it was sophomore Kaitlin Smith who reached the finals. All three Huskies in the event reached the semis with Smith setting a new PR of 8.85 in the second round, qualifying for the finals with the sixth-fastest time of the semis. Dennise Reyes also set a new PR in the semis, finishing in 9.26. Smith finished in 8.93 in the finals to place seventh.
 
Imani Jacquet, who currently ranks seventh in the Southland Conference in the weight throw, posted a fifth-place finish in the event with a distance of 15.93m/52-3.25. In the shot put, Chantel Ward placed eighth with a top throw of 13.14m/43-1.50.
 
Freshman Michael Anderson set a new PR in the men's long jump, placing sixth with a distance of 6.65m/21-10.0, while Von Beaudoin took seventh with a top jump of 6.57m/21-6.75.
 
Shantelle Slaughter set a new PR in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line in 59.05 for a ninth-place finish. In the men's 800, sophomore Christos Zachariou posted a time of 1:57.50 to take seventh place while Travis Jacobs finished 10th in 1:59.14.
 
In the men's 3,000 meters, sophomore Enoch Ramirez set a new PR with a time of 8:47.65 to place 10th. In the women's high jump, Danielle Spargur and Samara Hodges both cleared heights of 1.65m/5-5.0.
 
HBU will have one more indoor meet, the Texas A&M Aggie Twilight meet in College Station, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 16, before heading to Birmingham, Ala. for the 2019 Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday, Feb. 24, and Monday, Feb. 25.
