BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior
Denim Rogers became HBU's first Southland Conference men's individual champion in winning the heptathlon at the Birmingham Crossplex on Monday in the SLC Indoor Track & Field Championships and helped the Huskies' men's team achieve its highest point total since joining the conference in 2014.
Rogers accumulated 5,528 points, the fourth-highest SLC Championships mark ever, to edge out Incarnate Word's Rodney Littlejohn by five points for the win. The junior opened the day by winning the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.15 to pick up 944 points. He then tied for seventh in the pole vault with a height of 4.20m/13-9.25 before posting a time of 2:50.39 to take third in the 1,000 meters.
Freshman
Scott Boon also medaled, placing third with a total of 5,353 points, while setting a new program record in the pole vault by clearing a height of 4.70m/15-5.0 for 819 points. Boon finished second in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:47.03 and posted a time of 8.93 in the 60 meter hurdles.
Freshman
Christopher Welch capped his impressive indoor campaign by setting a new program record in the triple jump for the third time with a distance of 15.42m/50-7.25. Welch placed third to earn the bronze and finished less than four inches behind individual champion Tylen Guidry.
In the women's triple jump, senior
Tay Nance just missed out on reaching the podium with a fourth-place finish thanks to a top jump of 12.33m/40-5.50. Fellow senior
Danielle Spargur, meanwhile, tied for fifth in the high jump, clearing a top height of 1.67m/5-5.75.
On the track, freshman
Garrett Gibson earned points for the Huskies with a seventh-place showing in the 60 meter hurdles finals on a time of 8.36. In the men's 800 meter finals,
Christos Zachariou also picked up a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:56.73.
The HBU men totaled 32 points for the meet, the program's best total since joining the SLC prior to the 2014 championships. The women ended the meet with 16 points.
The Huskies will open the outdoor track & field season on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 15-16, in Houston at the TSU Relays and Rice's Shirley Crowe Combined Event.
