BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The HBU women's distance medley relay team picked up a bronze medal and junior
Denim Rogers leads the pentathlon after the first day of the 2019 Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships being held at the Birmingham Crossplex.
In the heptathlon, Rogers totaled 3,150 points through the first four events while freshman
Scott Boon sits in third with 2,976 points. Rogers tied for first in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.03m/6-8.0 to earn 831 points while his time of 6.96 in the 60 meter dash earned him 897 points and was good for second. He also finished second in the long jump with a leap of 6.94m/22-9.25 for 799 points while his shot put distance of 12.27m/40-3.25 was fifth-best and added 623 points to his total.
Rogers also bettered his own program record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.98 to win his heat and qualify for the finals with the third-best time in the prelims. Freshman
Garrett Gibson set a new PR, crossing the finish line in 8.24 to also qualify for tomorrow's final.
Boon, meanwhile, was the top finisher in the long jump for 804 points with a distance of 6.96m/22-10.0 while he added 806 points with a fourth-place time of 7.22 in the 60 meter dash. Boon boasted a top distance of 13.04m/42-9.50 to place third in the shot put for 670 points while his height of 1.88m/6-2.0 garnered 696 points.
The women's distance medley relay team of
Jessica Rabius,
Shantelle Slaughter,
Shirmalyn Moore and
Johanna Drews set a new program record with a time of 12:08.03 to place third, bettering the previous record from 2013 by more than six seconds.
Both Rogers and
Iyanu Adeyeye both cleared 2.00m/6-6.75 in the men's high jump with Adeyeye tying for third by virtue of clearing that height on his first attempt while Rogers cleared it on his second attempt to place eighth. In the women's weight throw, junior
Imani Jacquet posted a new PR with a top throw of 16.72m/54-10.25 to take eighth place.
Ana Kriletic, a junior, finished eighth in the long jump to pick up a point for the Huskies with a distance of 5.64m/18-6.0. In the men's 800 meters,
Christos Zachariou posted the third-best time in the prelims, winning his heat and qualifying for the finals with a new PR of 1:54.81.
The second and final day of the Southland Indoor Championships will be held on Monday, Feb. 25, at the Birmingham Crossplex with events beginning at 9:00 a.m.
