T&F: More Records Fall at Houston Invitational Day Two

Heptathletes shine and Nance surpasses own school record

HOUSTON, Texas – Junior Denim Rogers and freshman Scott Boon both surpassed the previous HBU program record in the heptathlon while Tay Nance broke her own record in the triple jump on day two of the Houston Invitational held Saturday inside the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the University of Houston campus.
 
The final three events of the heptathlon began with Rogers recording a second-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, winning his heat with a time of 8.21. Then, in the pole vault, both Rogers and Boon broke the previous school record of 3.90m/12-9.5, but it was Boon who shattered it by clearing a height of 4.60m/15-1.0 to tie for third. Boon then finished fourth in the 1,000 meters with Rogers coming in sixth. Rogers concluded his first heptathlon as a Husky with a total of 5,332 points to place second with Boon finishing third overall with 5,156 points. The previous program record, held by Garrison Fick, was 5,097.
 
Nance, who broke the program record in the long jump on Friday, bested her own previous record in the triple jump by 10.5 inches with a leap of 12.49m/40-11.75 to take fourth place. In the men's triple jump, Christopher Welch placed second among collegians with a top distance of 15.06m/49-5.0. In the men's long jump invitational, junior Von Beaudoin fell just shy of a PR with a top mark of 7.00m/22-11.75 to finish fifth.
 
Taylor Hill set a new PR in the 60 meter dash prelims with a time of 7.61 to place ninth and miss out on reaching the finals by one one-hundredth of a second. In the 60 meter hurdles prelims it was Ana Kriletic who just missed out on qualifying for the finals, placing ninth with a time of 9.04 which was less than a 10th of a second out of eighth. Garrett Gibson ran a personal best 8.28 in the men's 60 meter hurdles prelims to place seventh and qualify for the finals. The freshman posted a time of 8.35 in the finals to take seventh.
 
In the women's mile, freshman Jessica Rabius improved on her time from her inaugural collegiate meet with a time of 5:14.95 while Faith Crayton and Naomi Simei both also set new PRs in the event. For the men, Enoch Ramirez posted a new PR in the mile with a time of 4:22.89 to place 11th.
 
Danielle Spargur and Samara Hodges both cleared 1.65m/5-5.0 in the women's high jump with Spargur clearing it on her first try and Hodges on her second to place third and fourth, respectively. On the men's side, Iyanu Adeyeye posted a top mark of 1.95m/6-4.75.
 
The Huskies will be off next weekend before again returning across town to the UH campus for the Howie Ryan Invitational inside the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday, Feb. 8, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
