HOUSTON, Texas – Senior
Tay Nance earned a first place finish in the long jump and set a new program record with numerous other PRs being set on day one of the Houston Invitational, hosted at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday.
Nance, a senior who already held the indoor triple jump record in addition to both the outdoor long jump and triple jump records, now owns the indoor long jump record after a leap of 5.96m/19-6.75 earned her first in the long jump. Fellow senior
Ana Kriletic finished third with a personal record mark of 5.68m/18-7.75. Junior
Dennise Reyes, meanwhile, set a new Honduras national record in the event with a 5.34m/17-6.25 jump.
In the men's long jump, freshman
Christopher Welch placed first with a mark of 7.12m/23-4.50 in his first collegiate long jump competition.
Michael Anderson bested his previous top distance in the long jump with a jump of 6.59m/21-7.50 to take eighth.
Through the first four events of the heptathlon, junior
Denim Rogers and freshman
Scott Boon stand in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Rogers, with a total of 3,067 points, is less than 200 points out of first place. He tied for first in the high jump with a height of 2.03m/6-8.0 and took third in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.03. Boon, meanwhile, placed third in the shot put with a toss of 12.18m/39-11.5 and his long jump of 7.02m/23-0.5 was good for fourth.
In the pentathlon, sophomore
Kaitlin Smith set a new PR with 3,163 total points. Smith earned the most points from the 60 meter hurdles in which she finished fourth with a time of 9.12.
Stephen Aguilar, running in the 5,000 meters, set a new PR with a time of 15:31.48 to place third and better his previous best by more than 30 seconds. In the 60 meter hurdles qualifying, Kriletic set another PR with a time of 9.03 to place fifth and advance to the prelims on Saturday. Smith and Reyes also qualified for the prelims with time of 9.09 and 9.62, respectively.
In the women's 60 meter dash qualifying, senior
Taylor Hill earned a spot in the prelims thanks to a PR of 7.69 that placed her sixth on the day. The Huskies' final PR of the day belonged to
Justin Carmouche whose time of 7.23 in the men's 60 meter dash was the best of his HBU career.
Brandy Thomas posted a time of 59.06 in the 400 meters to place second while
Sergio Rivera Gonzalez and
Garrett Gibson placed ninth and 10
th in the men's 400. The women's distance medley relay team of
Jessica Rabius,
Shantelle Slaughter,
Shirmalyn Moore and
Johanna Drews finished third with a time of 12:31.94 while the men's DMR time of 10:24.41 placed them fifth.
Day two of the Houston Invitational will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Yeoman Fieldhouse beginning at 11:00 a.m.
