HUNTSVILLE, Texas – HBU junior righthander
Zach Carter went the distance in hurling the Huskies to a 5-1 victory over league-leading Sam Houston State in the Southland Conference series opener Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
Carter (4-4) allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks, throwing 103 pitches for the Huskies (23-26, 15-10 SLC).
Junior designated hitter
Grant Buck went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs for the Huskies. Senior first baseman
Jake Pulcheon also homered, while senior shortstop
Tyler Depreta-Johnson and senior leftfielder
Spencer Halloran drove in a run each.
Nick Mikolajchak (6-5) took the loss for the Bearkats (33-17, 19-6), allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Gabriel Sequeira gave up two runs in 2.2 innings of relief.
Andrew Fregia went 2-for-2 with a double and scored a run, while Blake Chisolm doubled and drove in the lone run for SHSU.
SHSU got on the board in the bottom of the first on back-to-back doubles by Fregia and Chisolm, but that would be the last time the Bearkats would cross the plate, as Carter shut them down the rest of the way.
HBU answered in the top of the second when Buck led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by Depreta-Johnson.
In the third, Buck ripped a two-run home run to right, his second of the season, to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.
Pulcheon added a solo home run to left to lead off the eighth, his third of the season, then Halloran delivered a two-out, RBI single in the ninth.
The series continues with a 3 p.m. start Saturday, followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday. The Legacy Sports Network audio broadcasts with
Russ Reneau begin with the pregame show 10 minutes prior to each first pitch and are available on HBUHuskies.com.
