DENTON, Texas – North Texas defeated HBU Softball, 9-5, in a non-conference, mid-week tilt Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium.
Junior
Heidi Jaquez went 2-for-3 with a home run, double, walk and three RBIs.
Demi Janak also homered and walked, while
Kassie James went 2-for-4 at the plat for the Huskies (7-23).
Freshman
Elliott Estes (2-5) got the loss allowing four runs on four hits, four errors and one walk in 0.2 innings. Relief pitcher freshman
Jessica Patak finished the game and allowed five runs on nine hits, five errors and one strikeout.
Katie Clark and Lacy Gregory went 2-for-4 for the Mean Green (22-17) with two RBIs. Clark homered and scored twice, while Gregory doubled, tripled and scored. Hanna Rebar singled, homered had two RBIs and scored twice.
Maria Priest (10-11) earned the win in 5.0 innings, as she held the Huskies to five runs on nine hits, five errors, four walks and two strikeouts. Hope Trautwein got the save in 2.0 innings holding the Huskies to no runs on no hits, no errors, three strikeouts and one walk.
The Huskies started off strong, as
Heidi Jaquez led off the first inning with a solo home run, 1-0. North Texas quickly responded in the bottom of the innings. With two outs,
Elliott Estes walked Nicole Ochotnicki and Gregory followed with a double to center scoring Ochotnicki. Rhylie Makawe pushed Gregory across with a triple to right. Rebar kept the rally going by singling to left and scoring Makawe. Sam Rea was able to contribute to the action by doubling to center and scoring Rebar. Patak came in relief for Estes and was able to put an end to the inning.
The Mean Green added two more runs in the second, after Camille Grahmann put a bunt down for a single and advanced to second with an error by sophomore second baseman
Amber Lotz. Clark homered to right adding two more runs to the advantage, 6-2.
Janak led off the third inning with a home run to center, but the Huskies were unable to add more to the board, as there were two left on base at the end of the inning. North Texas added a run in the bottom of the inning with one out thanks to a Sally Gastelo home run to center. The Huskies were able to stop the threat there as Grahmann singled to left, but was caught stealing second by Jaquez and Clark grounded out, 7-2.
In the fifth inning, Shedd led off with a walk that followed with a Bushman single. With one out and runners on second and third, Lotz put down a bunt and was out at first, but scored Shedd. Junior
Alyssa De Los Santos reached first by a walk to put runners at first and third, which brought up Jaquez, who doubled to left center and scored Shedd and De Los Santos, 7-5.
The Huskies were unable to stop the Mean Green offense and allowed one run on two hits and no errors in the bottom of the fifth and one run on two hits and no errors in the sixth, 9-5.
The Huskies host Stephen F. Austin for a three-game Southland Conference series Friday, April 13 with a double header starting at 1 p.m. and Saturday, April 14 at 12 p.m.
