HOUSTON – HBU softball split home-opening double-header with Texas Southern in non-conference softball Saturday afternoon at Husky Field. The Huskies took game one 3-2 and fell 4-2 in the following game.
Senior
Libby Brown went a perfect 4-for-4 in first game with a homerun and a double, improving her batting average to .357.
Nicole Shedd combined for a 3-for-4 showing on the day with a double. She now leads the Huskies with a .375 batting average.
Brooke Bushman went 2-for-3 at the plate in the second game, recording a double and a run scored.
In the circle for the first game, freshman
Jessica Patak (1-1) earned her first win. She held TSU to just two runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
For the second game, Senior
Stephanie Buenrostro (0-2) took the loss for HBU, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.
Jocilynn Ellis led TSU in the first game, hitting 2-for-3 in both games of the series. Terren Vinson also went 2-for-3, in the second game, recording a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
In game one, Bailey Daniels earned the loss, in the circle. In 1.2 innings she allowed two runs off four hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
Lauren Rodriguez got the win for TSU in the second game. In five innings, she only allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Tyra Williams faced eight batters to record the save, allowing a run on two hits in two innings.
Game 1 Recap
Brown broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third with a lead off solo homerun. TSU ended the threat, taking down the next three batter.
J. Ellis led off the fifth inning with a double to right center for TSU. A sacrifice bunt advanced Ellis to third, before D. Tello pushed her across with a single to left center.
Two innings later, TSU struck again, Patak sent the lead-off batter walking. A single sent pinch runner, E. Wiltz into scoring position. A throwing error by junior Alyssa De Los Santo on a steal, gave TSU the lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Heidi Jaquez struck out swinging, but managed to reach first on the wild pitch. Sierra Humphry singled to the right side, putting the winning run on first. Brown loaded the bases with a hard ground ball to shortstop. With the bases loaded,
Kassie James put a bunt down to score Jaquez to tie the game, while also reaching the bag. With two outs and runners on second and third,
Demi Janak comes up big for the Huskies with a single to left field, scoring Brown for the walk-off RBI.
