CORAL GABLES, Fla. – HBU grabbed a one-point lead with 13:26 remaining but the Miami Hurricanes pulled away in the final 10 minutes, holding on to defeat the Huskies inside the Watsco Center on Wednesday night by a score of 80-73.
The Hurricanes (6-4) came out hot, knocking down their first four shots of the game, all of which were from behind the arc, to take an early 12-5 lead. HBU (3-7) got back to within five at the 13:57 mark after an
Edward Hardt layup but Miami scored the next five. The Hurricanes' lead reached as high as 12 in the first half thanks to a Chris Lykes layup at the 5:17 mark but a nine-point run by the Huskies thanks to threes by
Oliver Lynch-Daniels,
Stephen O'Suji and
Philip McKenzie brought the score to 32-29 with just over three minutes left. The teams traded scoring the rest of the half with Miami leading 40-33 at the intermission.
In the second half, Lynch-Daniels knocked down a three to pull within three but back-to-back buckets put Miami back ahead by seven at the 15:30 mark. Hardt made a layup followed by a pair of threes from
Jalon Gates to put HBU ahead 48-47 with 13:26 on the clock.
The Hurricanes went inside the paint to respond, going on a 6-0 run on three layups but McKenzie responded with a jumper in the paint to make it a 56-52 ballgame with 10:44 remaining. With 9:26 on the clock, Lynch-Daniels made a jumper to again make it a four-point game but the Hurricanes answered with a 7-0 run to lead 65-54. Miami led by double-digits until an
Ian DuBose trey at the 2:08 mark pulled HBU within nine, 77-68. Lynch-Daniels then knocked down a three from the corner, making it a six-point game, 77-71, with 1:43 on the clock but HBU wouldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Lynch-Daniels scored a season-high 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three, to lead all players in scoring. The sophomore guard also had four rebounds and three assists. McKenzie finished with a career-high 15 points while Hardt added 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Braxton Bonds also had seven rebounds and three assists while DuBose totaled 10 points.
Miami used its size advantage to hold a 35-29 advantage on the boards and was able to force the Huskies into 17 turnovers while committing 14. The Huskies shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the floor and connected on 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from beyond the arc. The Hurricanes were 29-of-57 (50.9 percent) from the field.
HBU will have a week and a half before its next game, the Huskies' final non-conference game of the season, taking on Dallas Christian at home in Sharp Gym on Saturday, Dec. 29, with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off before opening Southland Conference play at home against Lamar on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 7:00 p.m.
