HOUSTON – On Saturday afternoon inside Sharp Gym, the HBU men's basketball team cruised to 143 points for a 143-92 win over visiting Dallas Christian for the highest point total by an HBU team since 2002 in closing out non-conference play for the season.
The Huskies (4-7) shot 69.5 percent (57-of-82) from the floor, including 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from three-point range, and out-rebounded Dallas Christian (2-9) by nearly 40 with HBU grabbing 53 rebounds to the Crusaders' 24. The Huskies also forced 22 turnovers while committing just 12. HBU out-scored the Crusaders on points in the paint alone, scoring 94 of the team's 143 inside the paint.
Sophomore
Ian DuBose led all players with 29 points thanks to 13-of-16 shooting while also dishing out six assists.
Philip McKenzie was 9-of-12 from the field and 4-of-5 at the foul line for a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Braxton Bonds, a senior, narrowly missed out on the second triple-double of his career with 16 points, nine assists and eight rebounds while
Oliver Lynch-Daniels added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Edward Hardt posted the first double-double of his career with a career-best 12 rebounds paired with 11 points. Off the bench,
Jalon Gates contributed 19 points.
DuBose made a layup on the Huskies initial possession followed by Dallas Christian's Devin Cubit knocking down a three to give the Crusaders' their only lead of the game, 3-2. Four minutes later, a Hardt layup pushed the HBU lead to 19-8 with 15:24 on the clock. That lead got as high as 14 before the Crusaders cut their deficit to five, 29-24, with 11:37 to go in the half. A Hunter Bennett and-one with seven minutes to go made it a 39-36 game but the Huskies scored the next eight points to go back up by double-digits. HBU closed out the first half with a 15-6 run in the final 3:18 to take a 66-49 lead into the half.
Dallas Christian scored the first basket of the second half to pull within 15 but wouldn't get any closer the rest of the game. The Huskies shot over 70 percent from the floor in the second period and totaled 77 points.
The Huskies open their 2018-19 Southland Conference schedule this Wednesday, Jan. 2, at home in Sharp Gym with a matchup against the Lamar Cardinals at 7:00 p.m.
