HOUSTON – HBU have five different players, four of those off the bench, score at least 10 points with freshman
Benjamin Uloko recording his first career double-double as the Husky men's basketball team defeated Arlington Baptist 107-70 on Friday evening in Sharp Gym.
Uloko, in his eighth collegiate game, finished the night with 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. The freshman was 3-of-6 from the floor, including 1-of-1 from three, and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Sophomore
Ian DuBose led all players with 18 points, connecting on 6-of-9 from the field and 6-of-7 on free throws, to go along with five assists.
Jalon Gates added 13 points for the Huskies (3-5) while junior
Jackson Stent set career-bests in both points, with 12, and rebounds, with six.
Braxton Bonds ended the night with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds while
Qon Murphy, a freshman, scored nine points to go with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior
Edward Hardt posted a new career-high on the boards, pulling down eight rebounds to pair with his eight points. All 13 Huskies who dressed for the game scored at least two points.
HBU got out to an early 8-4 lead but an 8-1 run by the Patriots (2-10) put Arlington Baptist ahead 12-9 at the 12:57 mark in the first half. From there, the Huskies responded with an 11-point run capped by a fast break layup by Murphy just over two minutes later to lead 20-12. With 4:50 left on the clock, a
Stephen O'Suji three pushed HBU's lead to 19, its largest of the half, but the Patriots were able to get back to within nine before the Huskies took a 47-35 lead into halftime.
In the second half, HBU dominated the boards with a 30-to-10 differential in rebounds and 17 of those 30 coming on the offensive end. HBU's lead grew as the half went on and after a Jashun Petite three made it a 73-51 ballgame a Gates trey ended a 12-0 Husky run and put HBU ahead 85-51 with 8:27 to play. HBU's lead grew as large as 45 points after a
Nick Jones three-point play at the 3:22 mark before Arlington Baptist closed the gap to 37 over the final minutes.
For the game, HBU held a 49-to-23 advantage on the boards with 21 of the Huskies' rebounds coming on the offensive end, leading to 22 second chance points. The Huskies did a majority of their damage in the paint, scoring 64 from close range. HBU shot 51.3 percent (40-of-78) for the game and made 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from deep.
Kennedy Jones led the Patriots with 15 points while Petite and Jordan Williams both scored 11 and Teeshawn Garrett had 10.
HBU returns to the road for the next two games beginning on Monday, Dec. 17, with a 6:30 p.m. game at Samford in Birmingham, Ala. before continuing on to Coral Gables, Fla. for a matchup with Miami on Wednesday, Dec. 19.
